People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.

Communication is the key to real reconciliation. Let’s talk to each other honestly about our history.

The thinking behind the creation of this flag set the tone for what was to unfold in post-colonial Sri Lanka. Instead of ensuring the rights and reassuring the fears of minorities, the Tamils (represented here by the saffron stripe) and the Muslims (represented by the green stripe) were only afforded a consolatory place on the national flag, while the brandished sword of the Sinhala lion faced them. While modern day Sri Lanka continues to feverishly preach their ‘oneness’ throughout the world, the institutionalised discrimination of Tamils from the 1950’s through to the current day is symbolised by the Sinhala dominated seven person committee that created this flag.
It said “We are not one, you are different from us and you are smaller than us.”
